It’s derby day in Aba as Enyimba host Abia Warriors

.As Doma United Beat Kano Pillars 1-0

Football fans in Aba are set to witness the first battle between their teams, Enyimba and Abia Warriors, in the post Felix Anyansi-Agwu and Emeka Inyama eras respectively.

Anyansi held sway as chairman of Enyimba Football Club for over 23 years, leading them to two CAF Champions League titles and numerous league crowns. Inyama, on the other hand, was chairman of Abia Warriors for 16 years before giving way to former Flying Eagles coach, Sam John Obu.

Enyimba, now under former Super Eagles Captain, Kanu Nwankwo, have been trying to regain their position as one of Africa’s best clubs, but the journey has not been that smooth.

They lost in the first round of the new African Football League and also crashed out at the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League under the former Arsenal star.

Last week, they lost their first home game of the season to Remo Stars in Aba, raising questions on their ability to retain the league title Anyansi won in his last season in charge of the side.

Abia Warriors have not had it better in the league. Apart from the away draw they recorded last weekend in Bayelsa, the team have not fared well away from home and have even struggled in some home games. And so today at the Enyimba Stadium, Aba fans will be treated to a game of two brothers trying to hold their own in the league.

Across the country, nine other games will be decided this weekend, as Rivers United’s game against Sporting Lagos has been postponed due to the Port Harcourt side’s engagement in the continent.

In one of the games decided yesterday, Doma United beat Kano Pillars 1-0 to reclaim the number one spot on the table. Emmanuel Ekpenyong got the winning goal in the 14th minute of the game played at the Pantami Stadium.

The rest of the games will hold today with Gombe United hosting Heartland and Akwa battling with Lobi Stars. Bendel Insurance will host Sunshine Stars, while Remo Stars will aim to reclaim the number one spot on the log with a win in Ikenne against Kwara United.

Shooting Stars will entertain Katsina United, Bayelsa will host Enugu Rangers, while Niger Tornadoes and Plateau United will tango in Minna.
