Unless a miracle happens, players and officials of Warri Wolves may head for the Christmas break without a penny to celebrate with their families. This is as a result of the poor financial stand of the club at the moment.
The Seasiders, as Warri Wolves is fondly called, will play their last game before the Christmas break tomorrow against Giant Brilliars FC at Kwale Stadium.
They have played four matches so far in the ongoing Nigeria National League (NNL), winning two, drawing one and losing one. They are currently in the third position on the league table with seven points, same points asthe second-placed club, but goals difference separate them.If the club beat Giant Brilliars FC, they will move to the top of the table.
Warri Wolves’ brilliant campaign in the season notwithstanding, the state government is said to be foot-dragging in meeting the financial demands of the club.
The Guardian learnt, yesterday, that the poor financial situation of the team almost stopped it from honouring last week’s away match against Crown FC, which they drew 1-1.
Some of the players, who spoke with The Guardian, yesterday, lamented that they found it difficult to cope with the poor financial situation in their camp.
“As we speak, things are really tough here, and unless the state government acts fast, a majority of our top players might move to other clubs. There is no money to run the club and I don’t know why our governor is not looking at our direction. We are heading to the Christmas break without a penny in our pockets. Delta State is too big for this,” the player, who pleaded anonymity, said.
Another player said: “We know that the economy is hard at the moment, but I am sure Delta State still has the resources to run the club affairs. A state like Abia is running four clubs, Enyimba FC, Abia Warriors, Abia Comets and Abia Angels. Delta can do better.
“
Warri Wolves are doing well at the moment, and we need the support of the government to achieve our dream of picking a promotion ticket to the NPFL. We can achieve it.”
No official of the club was ready to speak on the poor financial issue. Rather, they directed The Guardian to speak with the chairman of Delta Sports Commission.
