As part of its giant strides, UNICEF has successfully trained approximately 285,000 children orphaned by Boko Haram insurgency as well as vulnerable children in basic literacy and numeracy.
The significant initiative, spanning three years now, was made possible through funding from the Foreign Commonwealth Development Office of the British Government.
This project, tagged: “Teaching at the Right Level Initiative,” aims to provide safe, inclusive and high-quality learning, with a special focus on girls, those with disabilities as well as those affected by conflict.
The Education Officer at UNICEF’s Maiduguri field office, Mustapha Shehu, emphasised that the approach is nurtured to address educational challenges caused by conflict while prioritising inclusivity and quality learning for vulnerable children.

Shehu further explained that 2,800 teachers were trained in the Teaching at the Right Level method in Maiduguri, Jere and Kanduga as part of the initiative.
He continued that the trained teachers are stationed in arranged open spaces outside traditional classrooms to conduct two-hour daily sessions with approximately 50 pupils each.
Highlighting that the unconventional approach is aimed at facilitating fast learning, Shehu reiterated the significance of the initiative in tackling the educational impact of conflicts.
