NPFL: Lobi Stars reclaim top spot as Rangers defeat Tornadoes in Kaduna
Lobi Stars, yesterday, defeated Katsina United 2-0 at the Lafia Township Stadium to reclaim the top spot in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). But the win of the day happened at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna, where Enugu Rangers defeated home team, Niger Tornadoes, 2-0 to climb to the third position on the log.
The very impressive Lobi Stars, who have been in the top three positions since the league kicked off, continued their campaign to win the league this season with two strikes by Alao Danbani in the 70th and 80th minutes respectively.
The win took Lobi Stars to 42 points from 23 matches, one ahead of second-placed Plateau United, who defeated Bendel Insurance 2-0 with goals by Daniel Barnabas in the 52nd and 67th minutes.
At the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, the adopted home of Niger Tornadoes, whose facility in Minna was not adjudged good enough to host NPFL games, Enugu Rangers recorded two quick goals through Chidiebere Nwobodo and Godwin Obaje to continue their impressive run under Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu.
Remo Stars, who defeated Bayelsa United 1-0 on Saturday, dropped to the fourth spot on 39 points, but they have a game in hand, having played only 22 matches.
In the other matches, the bottom club, Heartland, held Sunshine Stars to a 1-1 draw in Akure, while the game between Rivers United and Kwara United was postponed because of Rivers United’s continental engagements.
In today’s matches, Enyimba will travel to Uyo to meet Akwa United, while Doma United will host Sporting Lagos.
Kano Pillars will host Abia Warriors today, while Gombe United and Shooting Stars will clash In Gombe tomorrow.
