Renowned advocate for women’s empowerment, Aminat Oyagbola, has identified funding and multiple roles women play as major barriers to their participation in politics.
Oyagbola noted that the political governance structure and system are flawed, with money politics being a significant obstacle.
She emphasised that billions of naira is required to participate in politics, making it difficult for women to compete.
Besides, Oyagbola identified the issue of godfatherism, saying women are often judged for having a godfather.
She also questioned the need for midnight meetings, suggesting that political conversations and meetings could be held during the daytime.
According to her, women make up only 6.7 per cent of the Nigerian National Assembly.
She emphasised the importance of increasing women’s representation in politics, citing the need for a more inclusive and representative democracy.
To address these challenges, Oyagbola suggested that conferences and workshops could provide a platform for women to share their experiences and challenges.
She also stressed the importance of supporting and amplifying the voices of women in politics.
Oyagbola’s comments came ahead of the 16th yearly leadership and mentoring conference hosted by Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR).
The conference, billed to hold on December 12, at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos, is aimed at equipping women with the skills and networks needed to lead and foster inclusive governance.

The event will feature a keynote speech by Funke Opeke, the Chief Executive Officer of MainOne, who will also receive the Distinguished WISCAR Award for her trailblazing contributions to Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Other notable speakers include Dr. Fatima Akilu, Executive Director of Neem Foundation; Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Senator representing Kogi Central; and Oreoluwa Lesi, Founder of WTEC.
The conference will also feature interactive sessions and networking opportunities designed to empower attendees with practical strategies and insights for advancing their careers and making meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic progress.
