Delta Rejigs board of Athletics Association, Ikpokpo is new chairman

Less than 24 hours after retaining their National Sports Festival title in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Delta State Sports Commission, on Friday, re-constituted its Athletics Association, with Sir Itiako Ikpokpo named as the new Chairman.

Ikpokpo is the chairman of Dumanis Icon and promoter of the maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF). He is also a two-term Chairman of Isoko South Local Government Council in Delta State, as well a Deputy National President of ALGON. Through the ALGON School Sports Festival in Delta State, sprinter Favour Ofili and other track and field stars were discovered for the country.

In a memo dated May 29, 2025, and signed by Okonma Franka, the Commission’s Director of Public Relations, Ikpokpo is heading a new eight-man board comprising representatives of athletes, coaches, National Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS), technical officials and media. Barrister Smart Edoge is the vice chairman, while Shaibu Aliyu Aliu is the Secretary of the association.

Chinedu Abujei is the athletes’ representative while Emily Osakwe will represent the coaches with Oba Joyce Oghenetaga as the representative of NAWIS. Godspower Odede is the representative of the technical officials just as Gowon Akpodonor is also named as a member of the association.

Ikpokpo is succeeding two-time Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) president, now vice president of the Nigeria Olympics Commiittee (NOC), Chief Solomon Ogba.
