The President of the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, commended the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for appointing Nigerian football legend, Segun Odegbami,as the state’s first-ever Grand Sports Ambassador.
The historic appointment marked the first time in Nigerian sports history that such a title had been bestowed.
Odegbami’s new role carries a forward-looking mandate: to oversee the creation of a robust sports ecosystem in Ogun State and to foster a thriving night-time economy, especially during and beyond the forthcoming 2024 Gateway Games.
In a statement, Runsewe praised Governor Abiodun for recognizing and celebrating sports legends while they are still alive, noting the importance of such gestures in preserving national pride and inspiring future generations.
He noted that by appointing Segun Odegbami as the Grand Ambassador, Governor Dapo Abiodun had set a precedent for recognizing national heroes while they’re still alive.
He said: “I want to sincerely commend the governor for this initiative which has indeed opened a new chapter in celebrating Nigeria’s sporting heroes while they are still alive.
“Honoring sports heroes while they’re still alive allows them to appreciate the recognition and enables future generations to learn from their experiences.
“Celebrating sports achievements can foster a culture of excellence, driving sports development and inspiring young athletes. Recognizing sports heroes also highlights the importance of sports in Nigerian culture, promoting national pride and identity.”
The NGF boss noted that the governor was an administrator who was very much concerned about the growth and development of sports at the grassroots.
He added that by honoring Odegbami, Governor Abiodun has demonstrated a commitment to promoting sports development and celebrating Nigeria’s sporting heritage.
He won the Nigerian Premier League with Shooting Stars in 1976, 1980, and 1983, and was part of the 1980 AFCON-winning team, scoring crucial goals in the tournament.
