As part of the efforts to revolutionise Nigeria’s dairy industry, FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC has announced plans to establish a dairy academy. Working in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development in Nigeria, the company said the initiative is designed to strengthen local capacity and expand the sector’s sustainably by providing a specialised training hub for farmers and service providers.
This was revealed by the Managing Director, Roger Adou, during the 2025 World Milk Day Conference in Abuja, themed, ‘Let’s Celebrate the Power of Dairy’.
The proposed Dairy Academy will be located on 20-hectare plots at Maya Farm in Oyo State and offer flexible courses alongside an intensive artificial insemination (AI) course. To facilitate effective learning, Adou said the facility will be equipped with a training hall, laboratory, cow sheds, hay barns, silage storage and essential farm machinery.
Since its inception in 2010, the company’s dairy development initiative has expanded across six states: Oyo, Ogun, Kwara, Ondo, Osun and Plateau as well as Abuja.
Executive Director of Corporate Affairs, Ore Famurewa, said the establishment of a Dairy Academy represents a major leap forward in building the technical competencies and business knowledge of dairy farmers. “We are committed to developing Nigeria into a centre of dairy excellence through sustainable backward integration and strategic partnerships,” she said.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, said the academy would serve as a national resource for empowering rural farmers to improve milk quality and yield as well as provide sustainable employment opportunities.
Reaffirming the company’s vision towards growing local sourcing, improving the livelihoods of farmers and expanding infrastructure, Adou said it intends to ensure that the country’s dairy sector becomes a catalyst for economic growth, innovation and national food security.
He added that the collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development on the academy builds on a long-term commitment to transforming Nigeria’s dairy value chain.
He noted that empowering farmers with knowledge, modern technology and sustainable practices is essential to building a self-sufficient dairy sector and they remain committed to making milk accessible.
