The former loyalists of Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South, have returned to the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).
Sumaila, who was elected to the Senate on the platform of NNPP, dumped the opposition party a few months ago for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) along with members of his constituency.
However, the supporters of the Senator, led by Jamilu Zamba, abandoned their former leader and returned to NNPP, citing the betrayal of trust and insincerity of the Senator.
The defectors, who hail from Albasu and Sumaila Local Council Areas in the Kano South Senatorial District, were previously aligned with Senator Waraka’s political group. Other defectors who joined Kwankwaso’s NNPP also came from Bunkure and Tofa local council areas.
Receiving the defectors at his Miler Road mansion, the Presidential candidate of NNPP in the 2023 general election, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, welcomed them back and assured them of equal treatment in NNPP.
The party’s National leader described the bold decision to return to the opposition party as a significant step in the pursuit of progressive, ideology-driven politics in Kano.
He reiterated his long-standing commitment to issue-based politics, which, he said, distinguishes the NNPP from other parties.
“I am always happy to receive people who believe in our movement, not because of financial incentives, but because of our collective vision for a better Nigeria. Ours is politics of ideology, not politics of the highest bidder,” Kwankwaso said.
In their separate remarks, on behalf of the returnees, Jamilu Zamba and Maryam Romo reaffirmed their loyalty to the NNPP and praised Kwankwaso’s leadership style.
