• Adode Charges Warri Wolves For Victory As NNL Super 8 Begins
Delta State athletes have declared that sporting activities in the state are better managed under the current chairman of the sports commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, compared to previous administrations.
The athletes’ verdict came on Friday, just as the Chairman of the Delta State Football Association, Godwin Adode, charged players of Warri Wolves FC to go for victory in the 2025 Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8, which begins Saturday, July 5, at the Steven Keshi International Stadium, Asaba.
For over four years, Delta State football was nothing to write home about, with Warri Wolves languishing in the lower division despite huge investment by the state government. Apart from Warri Wolves, no football team from Delta could get to the final in the football event at the National Sports Festival, including 2022 edition hosted by Delta State.
But within a short period under the administration of Onoriode Oborevwori, both male and female football teams of Team Delta qualified for the 2025 Gateway Games, with the female team winning the gold. In the same way, Warri Wolves FC qualified for the NNL Super 8 without much stress.
To the athletes, Onoriode Oborevwori, an ex-player of Frangers FC of Warri, has shown that he is a complete sports administrator as well as an excellent mobiliser of men and materials.
Speaking with The Guardian, on Friday, Francis Ossai, a track and field athlete, said: “I am not good at singing praises of people, but I want to say that Onoriode is a more complete sports administrator than all previous chairmen of the sports commission. He knows what he wants, and how to go about it. He does not joke about the welfare of athletes, coaches and other officials unlike what we used to witness in the past.”
Another athlete, Wilfred Ogaga, said: “Look at what happened at the Gateway Games. For the first time, Team Delta won the sports festival without depending on established athletes from the United States. There was no embarrassing story like medal paddling when we hosted the festival in 2022 or athletes complaining of non-payment of allowances.”
Meanwhile, the NNL Super 8 will begin this Saturday in Asaba, with the Chairman of the Delta FA, Adode urging Warri Wolves FC to go all out for victory.
Adode said the player must strive to maintain the form that saw them qualify for the Super 8 in a bid to gain promotion to the elite division as Deltans had been yearning for elite football in the last four years.
The DFA Chairman said the players must see themselves as ambassadors of the State as they carry the hopes and aspirations of over five million Deltans, stressing that Warri Wolves, who are the Pride of Deltans cannot falter now when the peoples hope of getting elite football is already looking a reality.
He also enjoined Deltans to throng the Steven Keshi International Stadium Asaba to cheer Warri Wolves to victory as they needed the home support to gain promotion to the elite Nigeria Professional Football League.
Warri Wolves FC will be contending with Crown FC of Ogbomoso, Osun United of Osogbo and Kun Khalifat of Owerri for the two available slots in the Southern conference of the NNL promotion battle.
