The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress has faulted the recent remarks made by the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, regarding the conviction of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra,, Nnamdi Kanu.
Obi had described Kanu’s arrest, detention, and eventual sentencing as “unfortunate,” adding that the process reflected leadership gaps and might heighten tensions rather than reduce them.
He made the remarks in a statement titled “Kanu’s Conviction: Obi Calls for Dialogue, Healing Over Hostility,” issued by his Media Aide, Ibrahim Umar.
In a statement on Sunday, Lagos APC spokesman Seye Oladejo criticized Obi’s position, saying it was inappropriate for political actors to comment on matters still undergoing judicial review. He cautioned against making statements that could be interpreted as undermining national security institutions or court processes.
According to Oladejo, Obi’s comments could be misinterpreted as politicizing a sensitive security issue, and he urged public figures to avoid remarks capable of inflaming public sentiment.
The APC statement further argued that consistent and balanced engagement is essential when addressing issues of national security and public order, stressing that all parties should respect judicial outcomes while allowing room for lawful appeal and dialogue where necessary.
Oladejo added that national security matters should not be influenced by political considerations and advised leaders to prioritize unity and stability in their public communication.
He reiterated the party’s position that the Federal Government remains committed to handling issues related to terrorism, treason, and national stability in accordance with the law and the constitution.
The Lagos APC urged Nigerians to view Obi’s statement within the broader context of ongoing political discourse and encouraged restraint, emphasizing the need for responsible public commentary on matters of national importance.
