Men of the Kwara State Fire Service on Sunday contained a major fire outbreak at a plastic recycling facility in Ilorin, preventing what could have resulted in extensive damage to lives and property.
According to available information, the incident occurred at about 5.10pm at Madfa Nigeria Enterprises, located at Olorunsogo, Biada area of Ilorin South Local Government Area.
A statement on Sunday night by the Head, Media and Publicity, PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, said preliminary findings showed the fire was triggered by welding activities within the facility.
Adekunle explained that sparks from a welding electrode reportedly fell on stacked plastic materials, igniting the blaze.
“The fire was intense because of the nature of materials involved, but the professional and gallant efforts of our firefighters significantly reduced the impact and prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining structures,” he noted.
He said firefighters quickly responded to the distress call and deployed two fire trucks to the scene.
Reacting, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, advised industrial operators and artisans to observe safety measures during welding and other high-risk activities.
He urged companies to clear combustible materials from work areas, use protective shields and ensure fire extinguishers are available.
Falade said adherence to safety standards would help reduce industrial fire incidents across the state.
