Parts of the Katsina metropolis were thrown into darkness after a fire incident damaged a 15 MVA power transformer at the IBB Way Injection Substation.
The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) disclosed the development in a public notice issued on Monday by its Head of Corporate Communication, Sani Bala Sani.
According to the notice, the fire affected the 15 MVA TR3 power transformer at the IBB Way Injection Substation and occurred in the late hours of Sunday.
The company said the cause of the fire outbreak had yet to be determined, adding that its technical team had been deployed to the site to investigate the incident and assess the extent of the damage.
KEDCO explained that affected areas were isolated as a safety measure to protect lives and property, noting that the outage impacted several parts of Katsina metropolis.
Areas affected include Kofar Kaura, Government Reserved Area, Dandagoro, parts of Kofar Marusa, Janbango, Kano Road and surrounding environs.
While apologising to customers for the disruption, the company assured residents that safety and speedy restoration of electricity supply remained a priority.
“Kano Electricity Distribution Company regrets to inform its esteemed customers in Katsina of a fire incident involving a 15 MVA TR3 power transformer at IBB Way Injection Substation which occurred in the late hours of yesterday, Sunday, 4th January 2026,” the notice said.
“The cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be ascertained. However, our technical team is currently on the ground to determine the cause of the incident, assess the extent of the damage, and work towards restoring the power supply in the shortest possible time,” it added.
The company said further updates would be provided as investigations and restoration efforts progress.
