António Guterres, secretary-general of the United Nations, has urged Nigeria to take the lead in Africa’s push for global reform.
António Guterres made the call during a meeting with Kashim Shettima, Vice President, on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
According to António Guterres, Nigeria’s population strength, democratic stability and vast resources position it to drive Africa’s rise in the evolving global order.
He also commended the economic reforms under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President, and Nigeria’s role in stabilising the Sahel and ECOWAS region despite internal security challenges.
According to António Guterres, Nigeria’s restructuring efforts and security commitments have enhanced its continental influence.
Kashim Shettima appreciated the UN chief’s leadership in promoting global peace and multilateral cooperation.
According to Kashim Shettima, Nigeria remains committed to multilateralism and stronger collaboration with the United Nations and other global institutions.
He reiterated Nigeria’s call for reform of the UN system to reflect present global realities.
Kashim Shettima stressed that Africa deserves stronger representation in global decision-making bodies, adding that Nigeria merits a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Both leaders pledged to deepen cooperation, with the United Nations reaffirming support for Nigeria’s reform agenda and leadership role in Africa.
