Adamu Abubakar, son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned as commissioner for works and energy development in Adamawa State.
In a resignation letter dated March 2, 2026, addressed to the governor through the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar did not state reasons for his decision.
His exit comes days after Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
In a statement issued by Abdulaziz Jauro, his personal assistant and media aide, Abubakar expressed appreciation to the governor for the opportunity to serve in what he described as a strategic capacity.
According to the statement, he considered the appointment an honour and pledged continued support for the administration’s developmental agenda.
The former commissioner also thanked his father for moral support and acknowledged the contributions of permanent secretaries, directors, engineers and staff of the ministry for their commitment to infrastructure development in the state.
Also, he appreciated the people of Jada for their support during his tenure. According to the statement, Abubakar said his resignation does not signal the end of his public service but opens new avenues for contributing to Adamawa’s growth and unity.
Fintiri had announced his defection to the APC in a statewide broadcast last Friday, stating that members of his cabinet and the PDP structure in the state moved with him.
Within 24 hours, 22 commissioners and special advisers also declared their defection to the ruling party.
