No fewer than eight persons have been feared dead after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated on a vehicle in Niger state, following an attack by suspected terrorists.
The incident occurred along Luma road in Borgu local government area, where the attackers reportedly used explosives to destroy a key bridge linking Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities.
The affected bridge serves as a vital route for residents, particularly traders travelling to the Babana border market, which holds every Monday.
Sources said the victims were travelling between Nuku and Woro when their vehicle ran over the planted IED, triggering an explosion that killed all occupants, including the driver.
Confirming the incident, Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in Niger State said the bridge was bombed by suspected terrorists operating within a forest in the area.
He disclosed that the attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, noting that security operatives have since intensified monitoring and launched clearance operations in the affected axis.
“On 23rd March 2026 at about 6.30 am, a report received revealed that on the same date at about 2 am, suspected terrorists within the park forest used an explosive device and bombed a bridge located along Luma road, Borgu LGA, connecting Luma-Babana-Agwara communities.
“It was discovered that the bridge was damaged by the hoodlums during security operations in the area.
“However, monitoring continues while clearance operation is intensified,” he said.
