As part of a strengthened effort to enforce environmental laws, the Ekiti State Government has intensified actions against indiscriminate waste disposal, with offenders now facing arrest and prosecution.
In line with this crackdown, four individuals—Fausat Babalola, 48; Mustapha Basiriyu, 29; Jinadu Abubakar, 18; and Kolawole Deborah, 30—were on Wednesday brought before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over allegations of unlawful waste dumping.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Prosecuting officer, ASP Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the alleged offence occurred at about 8:00 a.m. on March 24 in Ado-Ekiti, adding that the defendants disposed of waste in a manner deemed hazardous to the environment. He noted that their actions violated Section 30(1) and (2) of the Ekiti State Waste Management Authority Law, 2020, and requested a short adjournment to review the case file and prepare witnesses.
Defence counsel appealed for bail, assuring the court that the defendants would not abscond.
Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun granted bail of N50,000 each with one surety in a like sum and adjourned the case until April 28 for hearing.
