Eight worshippers of the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) in Kwara State remain in captivity after being abducted by suspected bandits, who have reportedly demanded a ₦1 billion ransom for their release.
The victims were kidnapped on Sunday during a church service in Omugo, Ifelodun LGA, when gunmen opened fire to scatter congregants before taking several members away.
Pastor Toba Omole, whose wife is among those abducted, confirmed to News Central TV that the kidnappers allowed the victims to speak briefly on Tuesday.
“This morning, we heard the voices of our people who were taken three days ago, including my wife. About eight of them are still in captivity,” Omole said. “Immediately, the kidnappers demanded ₦1 billion to secure their release.”
The pastor described the ransom demand as far beyond the community’s means and called for urgent assistance.
“This is beyond our power. We sincerely need help. Any efforts to negotiate or assist us would be greatly appreciated,” he appealed.
While commending security agencies for their ongoing efforts, Omole stressed that more action is needed to ensure the safe return of the victims. He also thanked soldiers who provided temporary security in the aftermath of the attack.
