Jehovah’s Witnesses have introduced a clarification to their long-standing position on blood transfusion, allowing members greater personal discretion in certain medical situations.
Under the updated guidance, adherents may now choose whether their own blood can be withdrawn, stored, and later reinfused during medical procedures.
In a video message released on Friday, Gerrit Lösch explained that the adjustment underscores the importance of individual decision-making when it comes to the use of one’s own blood.
He stressed, however, that the group’s core belief remains unchanged. Members are still required to abstain from receiving donated blood, in line with their interpretation of biblical teachings.
The organisation noted that while scripture forms the basis for rejecting transfusions involving another person’s blood, it does not directly address the medical use of a patient’s own blood. This distinction has informed the revised stance.
According to the group, decisions regarding the use of personal blood are left to individual conscience, with members encouraged to reflect on their beliefs and make choices based on personal conviction.
“The decision is a personal one,” the statement said, adding that members may arrive at different conclusions depending on their understanding of scripture.
While reaffirming its prohibition on donor blood transfusions, Jehovah’s Witnesses said members should approach personal medical decisions—especially those involving their own blood—with careful and prayerful consideration.
The clarification comes amid advances in medical technology, including procedures that allow patients to recycle their own blood during surgery, a development that has continued to shape discussions around the issue within the faith community.
