The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Assistant Inspector General of Police Olohundare Jimoh, has vowed to dissolve the state taskforce if any of its operatives is found culpable of human rights violations.
Jimoh gave the warning on Saturday during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Ikeja, stressing that misconduct would not be tolerated under his leadership.
Addressing concerns over a viral video showing the arrest of a traffic offender, the police chief defended the actions of officers, stating that there was no proof of abuse or inhumane treatment.
He explained that the suspect, who was apprehended for driving against traffic, was handled according to legal procedures. The individual was taken before a mobile court, where charges were read and bail granted, but was later remanded after failing to meet the bail conditions.
Jimoh noted that the taskforce plays a crucial role in enforcing environmental and sanitation laws across Lagos, which is vital for maintaining order in the densely populated state.
He added that personnel of the taskforce have undergone retraining focused on professionalism and respect for human rights.
“I will not hesitate to dissolve the taskforce and replace its personnel if there is clear evidence of human rights abuse. No officer is indispensable,” he said.
The police commissioner also acknowledged the role of the media and social platforms in exposing incidents, urging citizens to continue holding authorities accountable while warning against the spread of misinformation.
He encouraged residents to remain law-abiding and report any form of misconduct, assuring that all complaints would be properly investigated.
Jimoh reiterated that effective policing in Lagos requires a balance between law enforcement and respect for citizens’ rights, reaffirming his commitment to transparency, discipline, and public engagement.
