Tragedy struck in Ridawa village, located in Kano State, after a pit collapse buried several brick workers during the early hours of Wednesday.
The victims were reportedly inside the pit digging earth for brick-making when it suddenly caved in, trapping many beneath the ground. Fears are mounting that a number of them may have died, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Local sources said rescue operations began shortly after the incident, with residents and emergency responders making efforts to reach those still trapped under the rubble.
As of the time of reporting, some victims had yet to be rescued, raising concerns about their survival.
Sani Bala, the lawmaker representing the Ghari/Tsanyawa Federal Constituency, confirmed the incident and disclosed that about 10 persons were believed to be trapped. He called for urgent government intervention to prevent further loss of life.
However, Saminu Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, said the agency had not yet received any official report on the incident.
“We have not received any report on the incident. The Ghari office has not received a report on the incident, adding that as soon as we get details on the incident, we shall let you know,” Abdullahi said.
Rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities and locals continue to search for survivors.
