Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to embrace unity and shift focus away from ethnic and religious divisions, stressing that national progress depends on competence and collective purpose.
In a statement titled “Beyond Tribe and Tongue” shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi said Nigeria’s diversity should serve as a unifying strength rather than a source of division. He referenced India as an example of how a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society can achieve stability and growth through inclusive governance and strong institutions.
According to him, despite its vast population and cultural complexity, India has developed into a thriving democracy with a credible electoral system and robust civic engagement.
Obi also pointed to India’s progress in science, technology, and healthcare, noting that a significant portion of its population now enjoys access to medical insurance—an achievement he attributed to deliberate nation-building policies.
“These achievements are not accidental,” he said, adding that they stem from conscious efforts to strengthen national unity rather than deepen divisions.
The former governor of Anambra State warned that Nigeria’s continued fragmentation along ethnic and religious lines poses a serious threat to development and stability. He emphasized that unity remains essential for peaceful coexistence and sustainable growth.
“When I advocate for the unity of Nigeria, I do so with deep sincerity and conviction. Our cohesion is an indispensable foundation for peaceful coexistence, sustainable development, and enduring national stability,” Obi stated.
He further argued that the country’s real challenges are rooted not in identity differences but in governance failures and leadership quality.
“Ultimately, the true fault lines in our national life are neither tribal nor religious. No group enjoys cheaper food or greater security than another,” he said.
“Our real challenge lies in competence, capacity, compassion, and the commitment to build a better country.”
Obi concluded by urging Nigerians to unite around shared goals and expressed optimism that with the right leadership, the nation can achieve lasting transformation.
