As the 2027 general elections draw closer, political activity in Ogun State is heating up, with 15 aspirants 11 men and four women emerging to contest the governorship, following the end of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s second term on May 29, 2027.
The race for the Oke-Igbehin Government House has attracted a mix of political heavyweights, technocrats, and experienced politicians, signaling a highly competitive succession battle.
Among the leading male contenders is Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, representing Ogun West Senatorial District. Widely regarded as a frontrunner, he reportedly enjoys strong support from members of the State House of Assembly and has been building political structures across the state to broaden his appeal.
Other male aspirants include House of Representatives member Gboyega Isiaka, a three-time governorship candidate; Abiodun Akinlade of Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency; former CBN Deputy Governor Dr Tunde Lemo; former Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK Sarafa Ishola; ex-House Speaker Dimeji Bankole; Finance Minister Wale Edun; Communications Minister Dr Bosun Tijani; and Dr Tunji Oredipe.
From the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), 2023 governorship candidate Oladipupo Adebutu, popularly known as Lado, remains a key figure but faces internal party challenges that could affect his prospects. Meanwhile, Segun Showunmi of the Alternative Movement has reportedly gained support from multiple smaller parties, including the Labour Party, Action Democratic Party, and Action Alliance.
Women Contenders Gain Momentum
The women’s race is equally competitive. Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has returned to active politics via the APC, attracting significant attention. Current Deputy Governor Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele is reportedly weighing a bid, with campaign posters already circulating. Veteran broadcaster Modele Sarafa-Yusuf and US-based physician Dr Bolaji Odusina have also declared their ambitions, leveraging grassroots support and public profiles.
Agitation for Ogun West Power Shift
Calls for a power rotation to Ogun West, which has never produced a governor since 1976, continue to dominate political discussions. The APC is reportedly considering a consensus arrangement to manage internal competition, while traditional rulers from Ogun West, led by the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, are actively lobbying for support.
Religious considerations have surfaced, with some Muslim groups advocating for a successor of the same faith as Governor Abiodun. Observers, however, note that religion has historically played a minor role in South-West politics.
Popularity and Party Strategy
Political analysts suggest that public sentiment favors Senator Adeola, with strong grassroots recognition across the state. Sources emphasize that political parties must prioritize electability and public acceptance in selecting candidates to avoid past mistakes where imposed candidates led to internal crises and electoral setbacks.
On zoning and fairness, stakeholders note that the governorship has historically rotated between Ogun East and Ogun Central, leaving Ogun West at a disadvantage. Observers hope the APC will adopt a balanced approach similar to Edo State, where previously excluded areas were given opportunities to produce candidates.
Governor Abiodun Remains Neutral
Governor Abiodun’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, dismissed speculation that the governor is backing any aspirant, stressing that all APC candidates will receive party support once the flagbearer is chosen.
