The Osun State Government has approved the appointment of new traditional rulers across key communities, including the emergence of Prince Tajudeen Olanrewaju as the new Akire of Ikire.
The decision was reached at a State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Ademola Adeleke in Osogbo.
Prince Olanrewaju’s appointment follows the death of Oba Olatunde Falabi, Lambeloye III, on February 27, 2026. His emergence is seen as a significant step toward resolving the long-standing kingship dispute in Ikire.
The Akire stool had been embroiled in controversy since 2021, stemming from a 2014 Supreme Court of Nigeria judgment which ruled that the Lambeloye Ruling House was not entitled to occupy the throne at the time it did in 1987. The crisis led to a collaborative resolution between the state government and the five ruling houses in Ikire, resulting in an amendment to the 1958 Akire Chieftaincy Declaration. This agreement paved the way for the Aketula Ruling House to produce the next monarch upon vacancy.
In separate approvals, the council also confirmed:
Prince Tijani Feyi Ademola as the Aladodo of Adodo in Atakumosa East Local Government Area.
Prince (Dr) Jacob Adetayo Haastrup as the Olumobi of Imobi-Ijesa, also in Atakumosa East.
Additionally, the council ratified the elevation of new Obas across traditional councils in Ile-Ife, Osogbo, and Ijesha, further strengthening the state’s traditional leadership structure.
