At the Palm Sunday Mass held in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV delivered a strong message against violence, declaring that Jesus Christ, the “King of Peace,” does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war.
In his homily marking Palm Sunday, the Pope reflected on Christ’s Passion, emphasizing His rejection of violence even in the face of suffering and death. He noted that as Jesus walked toward crucifixion, He remained “steadfast in meekness” while others resorted to aggression.
Highlighting a key Gospel moment, the Pontiff recalled how Jesus rebuked a disciple who used a sword, reinforcing the message that “those who live by the sword shall perish by the sword.” According to the Pope, this act underscores Christ’s mission as a bringer of peace, not conflict.
Quoting the prophet Isaiah, he warned that prayers stained with violence are unacceptable before God: “Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood.”
“Jesus is the King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war,” the Pope said firmly. “He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war.”
The Pope also expressed deep concern over ongoing global conflicts, lamenting the suffering of victims of war and calling on humanity to “lay down your weapons” and recognize one another as brothers and sisters.
Concluding his message, he invoked a reflection inspired by Tonino Bello, praying for a future where violence ceases and the tears of victims are wiped away.
The Palm Sunday celebration, which marks the beginning of Holy Week, drew thousands of faithful, reinforcing the Church’s enduring call for peace in a world still marked by conflict.
