Tension erupted in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday following reports that operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) stormed areas around Kwara State Polytechnic, triggering panic among students preparing for examinations.
Eyewitnesses said the early morning operation caused confusion as students, many of whom were set to write exams, fled their hostels and lecture areas over fears of possible arrests. Some students were reportedly seen running for safety as security operatives moved through nearby communities.
Unverified reports initially claimed that several students were arrested during the operation, further heightening anxiety across the campus. The situation led to a brief disruption of academic activities, with some aggrieved students staging protests in surrounding areas.
However, the management of Kwara State Polytechnic has denied that the EFCC carried out any raid within the institution or arrested its students. In a statement, the school clarified that the operation took place in a neighbouring community and not on campus.
The institution reassured students and parents that the campus remains safe, adding that examinations and other academic activities are continuing as scheduled.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has yet to release an official statement regarding the operation.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the impact of security operations on academic environments, especially during critical periods such as examinations.
