The League That Got Away: Griezmann’s 16-Year La Liga Curse

Antoine Griezmann’s La Liga journey is a lesson in football irony. Despite starring for Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona during one of the most competitive periods in Spanish football, the French forward has never lifted the league trophy.
From 2014 to 2019, Griezmann was Atlético’s talisman, yet Barcelona and Real Madrid consistently edged them out. Seeking silverware, he moved to Barcelona in 2019—but even in a star-studded squad, La Liga remained out of reach. Atlético went on to win the 2020–21 title, just after his departure.
Returning to Atlético later, the title still eludes him, even as he boasts a World Cup, Europa League, and multiple domestic cups. Football fans can’t help but marvel at the timing—and the cruel irony—of one of the game’s most talented forwards never claiming the league crown in Spain.
