Residents of Are-Ekiti in Irepodun-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State are counting their losses after a devastating windstorm destroyed homes and critical structures in the community over the weekend.
The late-afternoon rainfall, which lasted barely an hour, was preceded by a violent windstorm that ripped off rooftops and caused widespread damage, leaving many families stranded and distressed.
A resident of Oke-Afin Quarters, Gabriel Awe, described the incident as sudden and destructive, noting that although a similar event occurred last year, the latest storm was far more severe in intensity and impact.
Among the affected structures are the old palace of the Alare of Are-Ekiti, sections of the palace fence, and the rooftop of St. Patrick Catholic Church Mission House.
Another resident, Afolabi Matthew, confirmed that several households suffered significant personal and property losses due to the disaster.
Reacting to the situation, the Osolo of Are-Ekiti, Omotayo Ayenibiowo, appealed to the Ekiti State Government for urgent intervention. He emphasized that the scale of destruction has overwhelmed the community, with many residents in dire need of relief and support.
“The crisis on the ground is beyond the community. The forum of elders is seeking government assistance to bring succour to the affected residents,” he said.
