Bashir El-Rufai has called on political leaders in Northern Nigeria to hold back from contesting the presidency in 2027.
He said the South should be allowed to complete its turn in power under the current political arrangement.
The statement comes as discussions around zoning and power rotation continue to shape early conversations ahead of the next general election.
Bashir, son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, made his position known in a post shared on X.
In the post, he argued that fairness and political stability demand that the South be given the chance to complete what he described as its remaining four years. “Let the South complete their remaining four years,” he wrote.
He explained that such a move would help maintain balance in the country’s leadership structure. According to him, it would also reduce tension often associated with the struggle for power between the North and South.
Bashir went further to suggest that Northern politicians should instead focus on the next electoral cycle. He noted that the 2031 election would provide a clear opportunity for the region to present strong presidential contenders without disrupting the current arrangement.
His comments also touched on possible political alignments ahead of 2027. He hinted at the idea of cooperation among key opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso. He suggested that a well-structured alliance, with defined roles, could offer a new direction for the country.
Though he did not give full details, his remarks point to ongoing behind-the-scenes talks among political actors looking to strengthen their chances in the next election.
