Former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against relying on palliative measures to secure victory in the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku argued that distributing food items such as rice, spaghetti, and noodles cannot replace public confidence or determine electoral success.
He stressed that while such interventions may provide short-term relief to citizens, they are not a substitute for trust at the ballot box.
According to Atiku, the current administration appears to be consolidating political power while narrowing the democratic space, despite its growing influence across the country.
He pointed out that with many state governors aligning with the ruling party, the situation reflects not strength but a fear of credible opposition and the electorate.
Atiku further claimed that control over key state institutions has not translated into confidence for the government, but rather signals unease about political competition and the will of the Nigerian people.
He also raised concerns over alleged efforts to destabilize opposition parties through internal crises and judicial interference, warning that such actions could undermine democratic principles ahead of the next election cycle.
