The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected remarks attributed to Nyesom Wike over the 2027 governorship succession, insisting that only the electorate has the authority to choose the state’s next leader.
Speaking in Port Harcourt on Friday, the state chairman of the party, Chukwudi Dimkpa, stressed that leadership in a democracy is determined through the ballot box, not by the influence or preference of any individual.
Dimkpa said the ADC is positioning itself as a credible alternative in Rivers politics, built on transparency, internal democracy, and inclusive participation. According to him, the party is working to develop a broad-based movement that reflects the aspirations of the people.
On the issue of zoning, he acknowledged its role in fostering balance and inclusion, particularly between riverine and upland communities. However, he emphasised that competence must remain a key consideration alongside fairness.
He added that the ADC would adopt a consultative approach in selecting its governorship candidate, with the goal of presenting a widely acceptable and capable aspirant.
Dimkpa also noted that the party would make decisions at the appropriate time that promote unity and strengthen democratic values across the state.
The ADC further highlighted governance, security, and economic development as top priorities, urging that choices ahead of the 2027 elections should reflect these critical concerns.
