Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Pope Leo XIV issued a joint call urging the international community to act urgently to achieve justice for the Palestinian people and support their right to establish an independent state.
Speaking during a meeting at the Cultural Center of the Grand Mosque of Algiers, President Tebboune said the two leaders are delivering a unified message calling for an end to violations against Palestinians and affirming their inalienable right to self-determination.
He praised Pope Leo XIV’s stance on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, describing it as courageous and principled, and noted that Algeria’s position aligns with the Vatican’s calls for security and stability in the Gulf and Lebanon, as well as efforts to alleviate human suffering.
President Tebboune also described the Pope as a champion of social justice and peace, particularly at a time when multiple regions — especially the Middle East — are experiencing escalating conflicts.
The visit marks the first stop of Pope Leo XIV’s African tour, which runs from April 13 to 23 and includes visits to other countries on the continent, with a focus on interfaith dialogue and strengthening relations with the Islamic world.
