The worsening welfare conditions in Sokoto’s state-owned tertiary institutions have prompted the Academic Staff Union of Universities to issue a strong warning and demand immediate government action to prevent academic disturbance.
The union’s affiliates at Sokoto State University and Shehu Shagari University of Education claimed in a news release on Wednesday that despite several requests to authorities, its members have suffered long-term neglect.
Dr. Bello Musa, the chairperson of ASUU-SSU, and Dr. Shamsu Kabiru, his counterpart from SSUE, jointly signed the statement, which emphasized that unsolved welfare issues are already straining industrial harmony and will soon undermine teaching and research if left unchecked.
The statement stated, “These problems have persisted for too long despite multiple reminders. Resolving them will sustain the harmonious working relationship and enhance productivity.”
The two main requests made by ASUU are the rapid execution of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement and the payment of special allowances for research and teaching.
The union urged Sokoto State to do the same, pointing out that the federal government has already started implementation at federal colleges.
“Unpaid Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) owed to lecturers for the academic sessions of 2022–2023 and 2023–2024”
The union stressed that since Nigeria’s constitutional framework centrally negotiates compensation arrangements, lecturers in state institutions shouldn’t be marginalized.
ASUU said that if nothing is done, lecturers’ dissatisfaction may worsen and both universities’ academic schedules may be disrupted.
As unions around Nigeria increasingly demand better funding, equitable compensation, and the execution of current agreements, the statement indicates growing friction within Sokoto’s higher education system.
According to observers, whether the situation evolves into industrial action depends on how the state administration responds in the next several days.
