BREAKING: Tinubu Removes Edun, Appoints Oyedele New Finance Minister

President Bola Tinubu has removed Wale Edun as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and appointed Taiwo Oyedele as his replacement in a major reshuffle of the country’s economic management team.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Yomi Odunuga, said the development was conveyed in a memo signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

The memo confirmed the appointment of Oyedele as the new Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.

The sudden removal comes amid growing concerns over Edun’s health and disturbing revelations surrounding alleged security threats linked to a purported coup plot within the Nigerian military.

Dr. Muttaqha Darma has also been appointed as Minister-designate for Housing and Urban Development.

The memo directed outgoing ministers to complete the handover process to their respective successors or supervising officials, with all transitions to be concluded on or before the close of business on Thursday, 23 April 2026.

Explaining the decision, Akume said the changes were intended to enhance coordination and strengthen service delivery across key sectors of the economy under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“These changes are aimed at strengthening cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Akume stated.

He added that President Tinubu acted in accordance with his constitutional powers under Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation also conveyed the President’s appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their service to the nation and wished them well in their future endeavours, noting that the process of cabinet reinvigoration would be ongoing.

The statement further noted that Taiwo Oyedele was appointed Minister of State for Finance in March 2026, while Edun was among the ministers appointed on 16 August 2023.
