The Cross River State Government has confirmed the isolation of a Chinese national at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) following a suspected case of COVID-19.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Egbe Ayuk, disclosed the development to journalists in Calabar on Tuesday, stating that the patient is currently receiving treatment under strict medical supervision.
According to Ayuk, the individual arrived in Nigeria via Lagos on 17 March 2026 before travelling to Calabar en route to a factory located in Akamkpa Local Government Area. Symptoms were reportedly first detected at a local clinic, prompting an immediate referral to UCTH.
Upon arrival at the facility, isolation protocols were swiftly activated, while the state government initiated its public health response measures to contain any potential spread of the virus.
“We have activated all necessary procedures, including contact tracing and isolation, to prevent further spread,” Ayuk said, adding that authorities are working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
The commissioner reassured residents that the situation remains under control and urged the public to remain calm, emphasising the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health.
The case has drawn renewed attention to Nigeria’s preparedness for infectious disease outbreaks, particularly in light of the initial emergence of COVID-19 in the country in February 2020, which led to nationwide lockdowns and sweeping public health restrictions.
Also confirming the development, officials from the World Health Organization, including state coordinator Dr Olatunde Yewande, alongside the State Epidemiologist, Dr Inyang Ekpenyong, said surveillance and response systems had been strengthened.
They explained that COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, can present symptoms ranging from mild to severe, including fever, persistent cough, fatigue and breathing difficulties.
Health authorities advised residents to adhere strictly to preventive measures, including regular handwashing, vaccination, the use of face coverings where necessary, and avoiding close contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms.
They stressed that early detection and prompt isolation remain essential tools in limiting transmission and preventing a wider outbreak.
