Easter Security: Military Heightens Nationwide Alert, Confirms U.S. Backing

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has directed troops across Nigeria to remain on high alert ahead of the Easter celebrations, assuring citizens of strengthened security measures nationwide.

Speaking during an end-of-month media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said the armed forces have intensified vigilance to prevent any security threats during the festive period.

He noted that holidays often come with increased security concerns, stressing that the military is fully prepared to counter any attempts by criminal elements to exploit the season.

“Festive periods usually require heightened alertness. Our personnel have been instructed to remain vigilant, and this Easter will not be an exception,” Onoja said.

He reassured Nigerians that security agencies will not let their guard down, emphasizing that proactive measures are already in place to ensure a peaceful celebration across the country.

“We understand that threats tend to rise when people expect security forces to relax. But we will not relax. Nigerians should go about their celebrations with confidence,” he added.

Onoja also highlighted ongoing collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, revealing that the partnership is boosting counter-terrorism operations through intelligence sharing and specialized training.

According to him, the U.S. is providing critical support under favourable conditions, although some operational details remain confidential.

He explained that while the benefits of such cooperation may not be immediately visible, the impact will become clearer in the coming weeks and months.

“Military operations take time to yield results, but Nigerians will soon begin to see the positive effects of this support,” he said.

The DHQ had earlier disclosed that about 100 U.S. military personnel were deployed to Nigeria in February to offer technical assistance, training, and advisory support for ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

Despite these developments, security concerns remain in several parts of the country, raising hopes that the enhanced measures and international collaboration will lead to improved safety nationwide.
