The Federal Government has unveiled plans to improve coordination in Nigeria’s cybersecurity framework by proposing the creation of a Cybersecurity Coordination Council.
In a statement, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the initiative will bring together government agencies, private sector players, and other stakeholders to strengthen the country’s ability to tackle growing cyber threats.
According to him, the move reflects a broader strategy focused on collaboration and shared responsibility. He stressed that safeguarding Nigeria’s digital economy requires strong partnerships, trust, and collective vigilance across all sectors.
Tijani added that enhanced cooperation would improve early threat detection, enable faster response to cyber incidents, and help build a more secure and resilient digital ecosystem. He also called on stakeholders to actively contribute to developing a sustainable, partnership-driven cybersecurity model capable of protecting citizens, businesses, and national infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched an investigation into a suspected data breach involving Remita Payment Services Limited, Sterling Bank, and other organisations.
In a statement signed by Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations at the NDPC, the commission disclosed that notices of investigation were issued on April 1, 2026, and affected parties are already cooperating by providing relevant information.
The NDPC said the probe aims to determine the type of personal data involved, the extent of the alleged breach, potential risks to individuals, and the effectiveness of measures taken to address the situation.
The commission’s National Commissioner, Vincent Olatunji, has also directed that organisations using digital payment systems without adequate data protection safeguards, as required under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, will be scrutinised as part of efforts to ensure accountability and strengthen trust across the digital ecosystem.
