The federal government (FG) has disclosed plans to spend ₦350 billion on the reconstruction of the Enugu–Onitsha federal highway, as part of efforts to improve road infrastructure in the South-East.
David Umahi, the minister of works made this known on Thursday while inaugurating completed sections of the road, noting that the project reflects the commitment of Bola Tinubu to infrastructure development.
Umahi explained that the initial contract sum of ₦202 billion had been reviewed, with a 72-kilometre stretch redesigned for reconstruction using reinforced concrete pavement at an estimated cost of ₦150 billion.
“The FG further carved a 72-kilometre stretch for reconstruction using reinforced concrete pavement, and this section costs about ₦150 billion.
“This section is being executed to higher durability standards similar to those used on the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway,” he said.
He added that the first 15 kilometres of the reinforced concrete section were about 97 per cent completed and had been opened to traffic to ease movement during the Easter period.
“This section is presently being opened to traffic to ease movement during the Easter celebration,” Umahi stated.
According to the minister, another 18-kilometre stretch is under construction towards Anambra State, while a separate 39-kilometre segment from the River Niger Bridge axis is also ongoing.
He further disclosed that contractors handling asphalt sections had been directed to adopt concrete technology for the remaining 23 kilometres, citing durability advantages.
“This is due to the longer lifespan and minimal maintenance requirements of concrete roads compared to asphalt. Asphalt fails over time, but concrete can last between 50 and 100 years with little or no maintenance.
“Fifty per cent of the entire highway would be constructed on reinforced concrete, significantly improving durability and reducing long-term costs,” he said.
Umahi commended the president for his resolve to transform infrastructure in the South-East, while contractors on the project pledged to ensure its completion in 2026.
