A Hezbollah member of the Lebanese Parliament, Hussein Hajj Hassan described direct negotiations with Israel as a “major blunder” by the Lebanese government, calling for an end to what he termed a “series of pointless concessions.”
Speaking to AFP from his office in parliament, Hajj Hassan said that “direct negotiations with the enemy are a major sin and a huge fall from grace for the Lebanese government,” arguing that such talks serve “no interest of the nation, the citizens, or Lebanon.”
His remarks followed a meeting in Washington between Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors — the first such face-to-face talks in decades — where both sides agreed to hold direct negotiations at a later stage. The talks are being sponsored by the United States.
Hajj Hassan criticised the Lebanese authorities for entering negotiations before securing a ceasefire in the ongoing war between Hezbollah and Israel, which began on March 2 and has displaced more than one million people and killed over 2,100.
He questioned how negotiations could proceed under US auspices, asking: “If they are unable to maintain a single condition called a ceasefire, how will they negotiate with the Zionist entity?”
The Hezbollah MP also said that “official Lebanon insists on obtaining a ceasefire through the Israelis and Americans… and does not want it through Iran,” criticising what he described as refusal to be part of a broader regional ceasefire framework supported by Tehran.
The comments came after reports that Lebanese President, Joseph Aoun rejected a US request for direct contact with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, prior to a phone call between Aoun and US President, Donald Trump.
