The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a major restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of efforts to boost efficiency, strengthen discipline, and improve oversight within the Nigeria Police Force.
The development was disclosed on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Placid, in an official statement.
According to Placid, the reorganisation is in line with ongoing institutional reforms aimed at refocusing the unit on its core responsibilities. He explained that the revamped structure is designed to enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-led inspections, and real-time supervision of police personnel and operations across various commands, formations, and departments.
He added that the new framework also integrates key investigative and monitoring functions to align with the force’s broader reform agenda.
The police spokesman noted that the initiative is targeted at promoting professionalism, discipline, and transparency, while ensuring accountability across all levels of the force. He said the Monitoring Unit will play a crucial role in identifying operational shortcomings and enforcing established standards.
As part of the overhaul, Disu also approved a leadership change within the unit, appointing Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar as the new head of the Police Monitoring Team.
Before his appointment, Abubakar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State commands. He has been involved in several high-profile investigations and is credited with contributing to improved investigative processes and operational efficiency.
Placid described the new head as a seasoned and community-focused officer known for his professionalism and commitment to transparent policing.
He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to sustained reforms, institutional growth, and the delivery of a more accountable and citizen-centred policing system.
