Salim Dola, an Indian drug kingpin who has been a subject of an international manhunt, is now in government custody in Türkiye.
59-year-old Dola was apprehended during a joint operation conducted by the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) and police units.
The fugitive was tracked down in Istanbul after managing to remain under the radar using a fake United Arab Emirates identification document.
Dola allegedly operated within the global synthetic drug network linked to the covert empire of Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar, an Indian mob boss and drug lord.
Dawood heads the D-Company criminal syndicate, which he founded in Mumbai in the 1970s. He is wanted for extortion, murder, drug trafficking, and terrorism, among others.
According to the Red Notice published by Interpol, Dola faces charges under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The legislation prohibits the cultivation, production, possession, sale, transport, and consumption of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
Designed to fulfil India’s treaty obligations, the Act mandates minimum 10-year sentences for major offenses, and restricts bail, with penalties varying based on drug quantity.
