The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has condemned a gathering of some medical practitioners in Abuja, on April 22, describing it as unconstitutional and a threat to the unity of the association.
In a statement, the association said the meeting was convened in defiance of an earlier directive issued by the National Officers Committee of the NMA, stressing that the assembly lacked legitimacy within the recognised structure of the body.
The Lagos branch warned that any decisions or resolutions reached at the meeting would not be recognised, noting that such actions could undermine the association’s constitutional framework and institutional stability.
It also accused those behind the gathering of placing personal ambition above the collective welfare and professional interests of doctors, particularly at a time when efforts are ongoing to improve working conditions and remuneration in the sector.
The statement, signed by the Lagos State Chairman, Dr Babajide Kehinde Saheed, described the meeting as “unconstitutional, illegal, reckless, and highly unprofessional,” adding that it did not have the backing of the state chapter.
“This unlawful assembly neither enjoys the support nor endorsement of NMA Lagos State. It represents a deliberate assault on the constitutional order, institutional integrity, and collective unity of the Nigerian Medical Association. Consequently, any decisions, resolutions, or pronouncements emanating from such an illegitimate gathering are null, void, and of no consequence whatsoever,” the statement read.
The association further expressed concern that some individuals were allegedly more focused on securing positions within the NMA than promoting the welfare and professional advancement of its members.
“It is highly unfortunate that certain individuals appear to be more interested in the desperate acquisition of political positions within the Association than in the genuine welfare, professional dignity, and advancement of Nigerian doctors. Leadership within the NMA must never be reduced to a selfish contest for personal ambition,” it added.
