UK-based Nigerian pastor Tobi Adegboyega, founder of the Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church (SPAC Nation), has sparked fresh controversy with a viral video in which he criticized the historical role of Christianity in Africa.
In the clip, Adegboyega argued that colonial powers used religion as a tool of control. “The white man came to Africa under the guise of selling a bigger religion,” he said, claiming that the Bible was deliberately altered to enforce submission, citing passages like ‘slaves, obey your masters’.
He added, “He used God to trick us. He tricked our leaders so he could exploit us and build his own country.”
The pastor further suggested that Western nations, having benefited from religion, have now largely abandoned it, while Africans continue to embrace it. “Now, Africans are the ones holding on to religion, and they’ve left it behind because they’re done using it,” he said.
Adegboyega highlighted a generational shift, noting that younger Africans are beginning to question long-established religious teachings. “There’s a new set of Africans coming up who ask questions,” he remarked.
One of the most striking statements in his speech was: “They put our parents in a ship called Jesus and shipped them in chains and fetters to other countries.” He concluded with a controversial view on Christian practices, saying, “Christianity is a social construct; it tells us how to marry even though there’s no instruction on marriage in the Bible.”
The video has ignited widespread debate online, with reactions split between those supporting his critique of colonialism and others condemning his views as provocative.
