The Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Ahmed Sanusi has announced plans to strengthen police presence across FCT satellite towns.
Sanusi who announced this at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja, blamed the current poor police presence in some satellite towns in the FCT on inadequate manpower.
He expressed optimism that the situation would improve with the ongoing recruitment exercise of 50,000 Constables into the Nigeria Police Force.
“I have observed that the Criminal Investigation Department in the command is currently having more than required staff.
“Our plan is to cut down the number of personnel in the department by 50 per cent and redeployed them to Divisional Headquarters to boost police presence at the satellite towns,” he said.
The CP said that the news conference was part of the FCT command’s sustained efforts at keeping residents of the territory informed of its operations, recoveries and arrests.
He said the command had intensified intelligence-led policing, surveillance, and targeted operations across all areas within the FCT.
“Today, I am here to present a summary of key operational achievements recorded across various Police Divisions in the last one month.
“Our focus is particularly in the areas of vehicle theft at gunpoint, ‘one chance’ robbery operations and removal of vehicles from where parked,” he said.
Sanusi disclosed that 13 suspects were arrested for alleged car theft, “one chance” operation and armed robbery while 17 vehicles were recovered within the period.
According to him, the command, within the period under review conducted several anti-crime operations across the FCT to combat incidents of car theft.
“Operatives from the Central Police Station, on April 10, while on routine patrol, sighted a suspicious black Hyundai vehicle with Reg. No: ABJ 371 DZ parked along a lonely road.
“Suspecting foul play, the patrol team approached the vehicle to ascertain its occupants.
“Upon sighting the police team, three suspects alighted from the vehicle and opened fire on the officers in an attempt to evade arrest.
“The officers responded decisively, injuring and arresting one of the suspects, while other members of the gang fled into the nearby bushes.
“A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two female victims tied up with ropes laying in the back seat.
“Upon their rescue, one of the victims disclosed that she had been raped by one of the suspects while in the vehicle.”
He said a follow up investigation, led to the trail and arrest of another member of the gang who had fled the scene.
According to him, during interrogation, the victim identified the arrested suspect as the one who had tied and raped her in the vehicle before their rescue.
The CP said the suspects were currently in police custody and would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
Sanusi also said that intelligence led operations and strategic deployments by Mabushi, Durumi, Maitama and Central Police Station Divisions in the FCT resulted in the arrest of 11 suspects and the recovery of 17 vehicles.
He said some of the recovered vehicles had been returned to their genuine owners after due verification, while some were still in police custody pending the identification of the rightful owners. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
