Reform UK has stated that it will conduct a review of all cases where asylum seekers have been granted over the last five years if it wins the upcoming general election, and the policy may result in the deportation of as many as 400,000 people.
This policy will include those who were granted asylum, visa overstayers, and immigrants from countries that are considered safe in a Reform government.
The party leader, Nigel Farage, had also hinted at implementing such policies in the future, which included prohibiting arrivals by small boats, and there might be several hundred thousand removals in the long run.
According to spokesman for home affairs, Zia Yusuf, the proposal was an unprecedented one and can be carried out using the available Home Office resources and speedy review process through entries instead of reassessment.
Yusuf further stated that increasing the capacity of detainment centers and reducing welfare assistance to the illegal immigrants would speed up the removal process. This proposal has been met with widespread condemnation from all sections of the government. The Labour Party said that it is currently toughening its immigration policy whereas the Conservative Party accused the Reform group of stealing their policies without mentioning any specific details.
According to the Liberal Democrat party, the plan was not realistic as it could further contribute to the backlog problem.
Refugee advocates have also criticized this policy proposal, saying that it would put more pressure on the asylum process, cost billions of pounds and create disruption in people’s lives.
