Former senator representing Zamfara Central in the 7th and 8th National Assembly, Senator Kabir Marafa, has explained his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), saying the move was guided by principles of inclusion, fairness, and internal democracy.
Marafa made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja during a reception held at the residence of Senator Seriake Dickson, where he was formally welcomed into the NDC. He wished his former party well, noting that his departure was based on “careful reflection and deep consideration” of political developments, particularly within the broader political environment he had been part of.
His defection comes just weeks after he had encouraged his supporters in Zamfara State to begin an ADC registration drive.
According to him, his decision followed concerns about party structures, congress processes, and leadership arrangements, which he said influenced his belief that political participation should be more inclusive and equitable.
“Politics is about inclusion, appreciation, and participation. Only when you are given the opportunity can you truly serve your people,” Marafa said.
The former lawmaker also reflected on his role in the formation and growth of the APC in Zamfara State, noting that the state played a major role in the party’s success during the 2015 elections. However, he expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as inadequate recognition of those contributions, particularly in political appointments.
He argued that fairness in representation and distribution of positions, including ministerial appointments, is essential for sustaining trust within political parties and strengthening unity.
Marafa stressed that his move was not motivated by personal ambition but by a desire to align with a platform that reflects his values of fairness, inclusion, and collective participation. He also called for stronger internal democracy across political parties, saying it is vital for Nigeria’s democratic growth.
While acknowledging the importance of patience and loyalty in politics, he noted that they must be balanced with fairness and recognition. “Silence does not mean weakness. It often reflects patience, observation, and strategic thinking,” he added.
Receiving him into the party, NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, described Marafa as a seasoned and principled politician whose defection would strengthen the party’s structure in Zamfara State and the North-West.
