The Mara Conservancy Veterinary Unit responded to an emergency in the Mara North Conservancy near Karen Blixen Camp, where an adult male giraffe was found struggling to move due to a severe swelling on its left hind limb.
Upon examination, veterinarians discovered a large abscess. The wound was lanced, releasing a significant amount of pus, and was subsequently flushed thoroughly. The injury is suspected to have resulted from a spear or arrow wound that later dislodged.
The giraffe was treated with systemic antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication before being successfully released back into the wild.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by wildlife in Kenya and underscores the importance of sustained conservation efforts.
