The Cross River State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has elected a 37-member executive through consensus, with Dr. John Ogar emerging as chairman at its recently concluded state congress held at Danic Hotel on Sunday in Calabar.
In his post-election speech, Ogar, who promised to take the party to greater heights, dismissed reports of factionalisation, saying the party “remains one indivisible and united entity.”
He claimed that the congress followed the party’s constitution and was backed by a court judgment affirming the state executive’s authority to conduct congresses.
Ogar averred that the national leadership only plays a supervisory and observatory role and cannot impose structures on state chapters.
He added that ongoing reconciliation efforts were underway, with the national leadership reaching out through emissaries.
Ogar said the party still had enough time to sell nomination forms and conduct primaries, stressing that the ADC was fully prepared to hold its primaries within the next few days.
He also downplayed recent defections, saying only one member of the newly elected executive had left the party.
The chairman criticised politicians who preach opposition unity but later abandon coalition efforts, implying that committed members remain within the ADC.
