Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has openly criticised the federal government under President Bola Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and the military over the growing insecurity in the country, especially following recent school attacks and kidnappings in Oyo State.
In a lengthy Instagram video shared on May 27, the actress reacted to the recurring abduction of schoolchildren and violent killings carried out by armed groups across Nigeria. She expressed deep concern over what she described as the worsening state of national security.
Ojo questioned the capacity of the country’s security forces, asking why armed bandits appear to operate freely despite the presence of military personnel tasked with protecting citizens.
“How come these bandits will come and they will kill, they will steal, abduct, and take away our children? Are these people more than you military men who are supposed to be in charge of protecting the life and property of your citizens?” she said.
She also suggested that if Nigeria’s security system is overwhelmed, the government should consider seeking external support from foreign intelligence or military partners to address the crisis.
The actress further expressed outrage over reports that perpetrators of such attacks have been bold enough to share graphic videos online, questioning why schools and places of worship have not been shut down in response to the rising threat.
Iyabo Ojo also criticised political leaders for focusing on campaigns and commissioning projects while insecurity continues to claim lives across the country. She warned that ongoing violence could render such developments meaningless if citizens are no longer alive to benefit from them.
“We don’t need you commissioning roads. We don’t need you commissioning schools anymore for now. We don’t need you sharing rice… if they do not do something fast about this, there will be no people to walk on that road,” she said.
She further stated that she is no longer interested in political campaigns, adding that she has not seen enough commitment from leaders who promise change.
Addressing Nigerians, especially young people, celebrities, and the general public, the filmmaker behind Return of Arinzo warned that insecurity is not limited to rural areas and could eventually reach urban and gated communities if left unchecked.
She urged citizens to move beyond political divisions and social media arguments, and instead unite to demand accountability from government officials at all levels through peaceful protests.
“Social media, we get so carried away that all we do is talk, talk, talk, and no action… we are not angry enough,” she said, adding that collective action is necessary to push for real change.
Ojo concluded by encouraging Nigerians, even those with small online followings, to use their platforms to speak out consistently until meaningful action is taken.
