The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country, while announcing heightened nationwide preparedness measures to prevent any possible outbreak.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, said the government has intensified surveillance and response systems following recent Ebola outbreaks reported in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
According to the minister, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Port Health Services, the World Health Organization and other relevant agencies to closely monitor developments and strengthen national readiness.
“While Nigeria currently has no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease, the Federal Government is taking all necessary proactive measures to strengthen national preparedness, surveillance, and coordination mechanisms to protect the health and wellbeing of all Nigerians,” Pate stated.
He disclosed that the government has already activated enhanced surveillance and monitoring systems nationwide, strengthened screening procedures at airports and border points, improved laboratory diagnostic capacity, and reinforced infection prevention and control measures across health facilities.
The minister also said authorities are intensifying public awareness campaigns and community engagement efforts to ensure Nigerians remain informed and vigilant.
Pate urged citizens to remain calm, avoid spreading misinformation, maintain proper hygiene practices, and immediately report any unusual illness to the nearest health facility.
Healthcare workers across the country have also been directed to maintain strict infection prevention protocols, promptly isolate suspected cases, and report through established public health channels.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting public health and ensuring rapid response mechanisms remain active to safeguard Nigerians against any potential Ebola threat.
